Manchester United are plotting a summer swoop for Atalanta playmaker Charles de Ketelaere.
The Red Devils were limited to signing defender Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window due to Profit and Sustainability Rules and Regulations (PRS) concerns, while Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were sent out on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Ruben Amorim, who has been struggling to get positive results at the club, is seeking to make his mark on the squad by overseeing more deals in the coming months. Amid the ongoing season that has been nothing short of disaster, the club chiefs along with Ruben Amorim are wasting no time making plans to bolster the squad when the transfer window reopens in the summer.
Man United have reportedly identified the talented and versatile attacker Charles de Ketelaere as an option to bolster their attacking ranks but face competition from cross-town rivals Manchester City for his signature.
De Ketelaere, 23, is considered to be one of the best attacking players in Europe, thanks to his decision to leave AC Milan for Atalanta in 2023. The Belgian has been a player reborn under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta after a tough spell at Milan, and he has notched 11 goals and 11 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions this season. He is on course to enjoy his most prolific season in his career to date.
Charles de Ketelaere could be a sensational signing for Man United
Man United are expected to be significantly active in the summer transfer market after enduring a nightmare season in the Premier League. The attacking third has been a major issue, with neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee producing a regular supply of goals. As a result, there are now doubts over Hojlund and Zirkzee’s long-term futures at Old Trafford.
In addition, skipper Bruno Fernandes continues to blow hot and cold. The Portugal international remains Man United’s talisman but it is worth noting that he has turned 30 and is expected to slow down in the coming years. If Amorim wants to bring in a player who can push Fernandes regularly, there would be no better player than De Ketelaere right now.
De Ketelaere can operate as a centre-forward, creative midfielder as well as on the flanks, and he would be a great fit in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. The Bruges-born talent can occupy one of the No.10 roles or operate as a false 9 when required. Having him in the final third along with Fernandes and Amad Diallo would give Man United attack’s the cutting edge that they have lacked this season.
That being said, the Red Devils may find it difficult to tempt Atalanta to sell one of their prized assets in the summer.
