Chelsea are monitoring the situation of Victor Osimhen at Napoli ahead of a potential bid in January, as Mauricio Pochettino eyes two strikers.
Mauricio Pochettino’s start to life as Chelsea boss hasn’t gone to plan, with a glut of injuries impacting the team’s poor performances in the Premier League. The Blues have struggled to score goals this season, managing just five in six Premier League games thus far. As a result, they are desperate to improve their attacking options and have already started planning for the January transfer window.
The Chelsea boss is keen on signing two new strikers, with Victor Osimhen reportedly high on his wishlist for January. Brentford’s Ivan Toney is another target.
Osimhen, 25, has been a huge success at Napoli, playing a key role in their Scudetto triumph last season after 33 years. He has netted 64 goals in 109 games for Napoli, including 26 in 32 Serie A games during the 2022/23 campaign. However, there are doubts growing over his future at the club after Napoli’s bizarre official TikTok account appeared to mock the Nigerian striker’s penalty miss in the 0-0 draw against Bologna.
And Chelsea may be ready to break the bank for Osimhen when the transfer window reopens, despite already spending £1billion under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
Chelsea to spend big on Victor Osimhen?
Under the ownership of Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have mainly focused on building a squad for the future in the last three transfer windows.
The West London outfit have spent big on top young talent like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Noni Madueke and Mykhaylo Mudryk, but it’s not exactly brought them as much success as they’d have hoped, so they might become a bit more flexible in their approach to signings in the upcoming windows and consider adding some more proven players to their present struggling squad as well.
A proven goalscorer is considered to be at the apex of Pochettino’s wishlist following Chelsea’s royal struggles in front of goal. The Blues are believed to be keeping tabs on Victor Osimhen amid his ongoing issue with Napoli. Rated as one of the most coveted strikers in European football right now, Osimhen is expected to cost north of £130million.
Chelsea will need quality additions in the mid-season trading period to turn things around. A potent striker like Osimhen will certainly help solve one of their biggest problems and lift Pochettino’s squad. He will be perfect to lead Chelsea’s attack whilst grooming youngsters like Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja.
However, Chelsea will need to come up with an insane bid to tempt Napoli into selling Osimhen.
