Aston Villa are reportedly set to sign Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers in a deal worth up to £15 million.

There was a breakthrough in talks on Tuesday after Aston Villa’s third offer of £7.5m plus add-ons was rejected on Monday. The fourth proposal was accepted by Middlesbrough and the player is due for a medical at Aston Villa imminently. It is believed that Middlesbrough have agreed to an initial upfront fee of £10 million, plus a further £5 million in add-ons. He is set to sign a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Villans.

Morgan Rogers, 21, joined Boro from Manchester City for £1.5m in the past summer transfer window and has impressed under manager Michael Carrick, scoring seven goals and supplying a further nine assists in all competitions. Following his eye-catching performances in the Championship, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has prioritised the signing of the young forward as he wants to bolster his attacking ranks for the gruelling second half of the season.

Morgan Rogers’ final appearance for Boro was in last week’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which was won by the Premier League side, though the 21-year-old scored a fine individual goal as a consolation in the 6-1 hammering. The potential arrival of Rogers, who can play as a central midfielder and in forward areas, will place further uncertainty on the futures of Jacob Ramsey and Jhon Duran.

Ramsey excelled at Villa last season following the arrival of Unai Emery, finishing the 2022/23 campaign with six goals and eight assists in 38 games across all competitions. The Englishman was hoping to build on that impressive campaign but injuries have held him back, limiting him to just 14 appearances so far this term. The creative midfielder has attracted interest from Tottenham, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich of late, as Villa might be forced into selling one of their star players before the end of June in order to comply with the FFP rules.

As for Duran, the Colombian forward has cut a frustrated figure after a lack of first-team opportunities and he could leave Villa Park before Wednesday’s transfer deadline. His potential availability amidst Villa’s need to raise funds has alerted clubs such as AC Milan and West Ham, while Chelsea are believed to have made initial approaches.
