Suarez has last laugh

Koeman to blame for Barcelona’s downfall and Atletico’s title triumph! Yet Barcelona never learn from their transfer mistakes!

After what has been a difficult season for everyone, the La Liga title decider was one that was going down to the final day.

Barcelona fell too far behind after recent results so it was all down to a two horse race between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to battle it out for the title.

With two points separating Atletico in first and Real Madrid in second, all eyes were on the final games of the season. Real needed a win and for Atletico to lose or draw for them to claim the title but Atletico just needed to win and get all three points to claim the title, regardless of what Real did.

And given how this season has had its number of ups and downs, anything was possible on the final day. But it would be Atletico Madrid and Luis Suarez in particular who would have the last laugh as they kept their nerve winning 2-1 on the day as did Real, but Atletico’s three points proved the most vital!

Falling behind as quick as the 18th minute it seemed as though Atletico’s nerves had got the better of them and that they would hand the title to their rivals. However, a second-half comeback with an Angel Correa equaliser on 57 minutes and a Suarez winner 10 minutes later, that he fired into the back of the net for a 2-1 win had meant Atletico held out to keep and bag all three points.

Thanks to the win Atletico now claim their 11th title and their first in seven years. Their last one coming in 2014 with Simeone as manager and this is now his second La Liga title since joining the club in 2011.

Although Atletico have won and lost as a team this season, you can’t help but congratulate Luis Suarez, who practically had the final say in an unpredictable and unimaginable season! And let’s not forget that Atletico signed Suarez for £5m from title rivals Barcelona after Ronald Koeman deemed him surplus to requirements and didn’t see him in his own future plans!

Speaking to La Liga TV after the win twitter.com has reported that an emotional Suarez said: “Barcelona didn’t value me… they underestimated me and Atletico opened their doors to give me an opportunity. I will always be grateful to this club for trusting in me.”

With 21 goals in 38 games for Simeone’s side Suarez pretty much helped lead Atletico to the title. With important goals in the title race games as well when he scored in a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in March, as well as goals and assists that ensured victories over Cadiz, Eibar, Alaves, Getafe and Elche.

So, I guess Barcelona never learn, they let David Villa go to Atletico and he won La Liga the next season in his one and only season at the Colchoneros in 2013-14 and now the same thing has happened with Suarez!

He scored the deciding and winning goal of Atletico’s season to down both Real and Barcelona, to pay back the trust that Simeone showed in him. And I bet Koeman is regretting letting him go now!
