Three managers who could replace Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea

Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly has not taken long to make his mark in west London. Just 100 days into his reign, Boehly has stunned the footballing fraternity by sacking Thomas Tuchel following the Pensioners’ 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

A run of just two wins from first six games in the new Premier League season resulted in Thomas Tuchel’s firing. Chelsea became European and world champions during Tuchel’s time in charge, but the German tactician’s unceremonious departure after 21-month tenure has left the Blues with the task of finding a worthy successor.

But who could replace Tuchel? Here are three names Chelsea must consider.

  1. Graham Potter

Brighton and Hove Albion's new manager Graham Potter

Brighton manager Graham Potter is in the driver’s seat to take the highly desirable job at Chelsea.

One of world football’s most coveted up-and-coming managers, Graham Potter has worked miracles on a shoestring budget at Brighton. He has given the Seagulls an identity of play, whilst bringing fight and grit to the football club.

Despite losing several key players in recent seasons, the savvy recruitment at the Amex Stadium has helped Potter’s side cope well and show improvements. Whether Potter succeeds in uniting the Chelsea dressing room that has some big characters and egos remains to be seen, but certainly, the Englishman is at the top of Boehly’s wishlist to replace Tuchel.

  1. Zinedine Zidane

If Boehly and Chelsea are looking for a glamorous appointment, then there is no one better than Zinedine Zidane at the moment in time.

Zinedine Zidane has not been in the job since leaving Real Madrid in May 2021. As a manager, he has won a total of 11 trophies. It is an open secret that Zidane has his sights set on the French national team job after the World Cup this winter, with Didier Deschamps’ future up in the air.

Stranger things have happened in football, though, and Boehly will hope the appeal of managing one of the top clubs in the Premier League will force Zidane to change his mind.

  1. Mauricio Pochettino

A name probably on everyone’s lips, Mauricio Pochettino is available after being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in July.

Despite winning the Ligue 1 title, Pochettino failed to hold onto the coveted job at the Parc des Princes and was replaced by Christophe Galtier ahead of the new season. The Argentinean manager is known for the work he did at Tottenham from 2014 to 2019.

Not only did he transform a Spurs side and make them challenge perennially for a top four spot in the Premier League but also led them to the 2019 Champions League final. Pochettino has solid Premier League experience and could work wonders with the current Chelsea squad that has a great mix of youth and experience.

Undoubtedly, the ex-PSG gaffer remains a top candidate to replace Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
