Tottenham target Brentford goalkeeper David Raya

Tottenham have identified Brentford goalkeeper David Raya as the long-term successor to Hugo Lloris.

The north London club are actively scouring the market to replace captain Hugo Lloris, who has a contract with the club until the summer of 2024. Lloris, 36, signed a two-year contract extension last year but his standards have dipped somewhat this season. He has become error-prone in recent years and was culpable for Tottenham’s opening goal in the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on New Year’s Eve.

Nonetheless, Lloris has been a loyal servant to Spurs since joining them from French club Lyon in August 2012. The 2018 World Cup winner has made 439 appearances for the Lilywhites in all competitions, keeping 149 clean sheets during that period. Having captained Spurs since 2015, the veteran shot-stopper helped the club reach the Champions League final four years ago.

Thus, it won’t be an easy task for Spurs in replacing a seasoned campaigner and a leader like Lloris, who will turn 37 later this year and announced his retirement from international football earlier this month. As such, Spurs have started to hunt for quality replacements for him.

Brentford’s David Raya has reportedly emerged as a target for Tottenham. Raya, 27, is tied to Brentford until 2024 as he finds himself in a similar position to that of Lloris at Spurs. So, he will enter the final year of his contract with the Bees in the summer.

David Raya could be a top successor for Hugo Lloris

David Raya’s rise has continued in the last 12-15 months, playing a key role in Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League in 2021. He has become one of the Premier League’s highly-rated goalkeepers thanks to his composure with the ball at his feet, sweeping ability and leadership skills.

The 27-year-old made his senior Spain debut in 2022 and was a part of Luis Enrique’s squad in the Qatar World Cup last year. He has proven his pedigree in the English top-flight with Brentford and could be open to a bigger challenge in England, even though Thomas Frank’s side are fighting tooth and nail to qualify for Europe next season.

Tottenham are set to step up their pursuit of signing a new goalkeeper to replace their current No.1, Hugo Lloris. There are concerns with regard to Lloris’ age and a massive dip in form, which has left manager Antonio Conte wanting some stability in the goalkeeping position for the next few years.

Raya is 27 and perhaps still far away from his peak years in the game. He is well up there with one of the top sweeper-keepers in the division, and while he isn’t hugely experienced at the highest level, the two-cap Spanish international has the qualities to be a solid long-term successor to Lloris for Spurs.
