Tottenham frontrunners to sign Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto

Tottenham are keen on signing Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto, who is rated at around €30 million.

Wilfried Gnonto

Wilfried Gnonto, 20, wanted to leave Leeds United in the summer transfer window following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. But he has blocked off a move by the Whites, although the youngster has hardly featured under Daniel Farke in the Championship.

While he missed a chance to clinch a move in the summer, the Italy international remains keen to end his time at Elland Road in January. There is interest from Serie A clubs in taking Gnonto back to Italy, with AS Roma and Lazio particularly studying his situation carefully. But they could face competition from Tottenham.

Spurs are reportedly plotting up a swap deal with Leeds that would see Gnonto head to north London and Joe Rodon, who is currently on loan at Elland Road until the end of the season, join the Championship club permanently.

Wilfried Gnonto’s profile ‘appreciated’ by Tottenham management

Joe Rodon has been farmed out on loan over the past two seasons and failed to earn a permanent move to Rennes last season. The Welsh defender’s stint with Leeds has looked more promising and he may be open to joining them permanently in the future, as he has practically no chance of breaking into the Tottenham team under Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs value Rodon at £20million, but his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025 and that could force them to lower their price. It is unlikely to see Leeds splash such a fee unless they achieve promotion next year, and with Gnonto keen to leave, a swap deal could be the perfect middle ground for both clubs.

Gnonto’s profile is appreciated by the Spurs management and he would be tempted to join the north London club due to their top-flight status. Tottenham, who are hit by a spate of injuries, need to add more quality and depth to their attacking unit. Wide attackers such as Richarlison, Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon are currently sidelined with injuries, leaving Postecoglou with Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson are the only wingers available at his disposal right now.

As a result, Spurs need more options in their squad, and Gnonto could be a top addition. The Italy international has shown that he is good enough to play at the highest level, and working under a smart coach in Postecoglou could see him further develop different facets of his game. The north London club certainly have the financial muscle to pay Leeds’ valuation for the youngster, who is desperate to play at the highest level to increase his chances of making the Italy squad for the 2024 European Championships.
