Tottenham eyeing move for €20m-rated Juventus defender Federico Gatti

Tottenham Hotspur planning to bolster their defensive unit with the signing of Juventus defender Federico Gatti.

Spurs have had an unprecedented injury situation this season, with the defensive unit hit the most. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven—the club’s first-choice centre-backs—have missed more than two months of action due to a hamstring and quad injuries, respectively. Veteran Ben Davies also was sidelined for a month owing to a hamstring issue, while Radu Dragusin has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL in January.

The persistent issues at the back forced Ange Postecoglou to jump to makeshift solutions by using young midfielder Archie Gray in central defence. In addition, the North Londoners also took a dip in the winter window to sign a central defender and ended up with Kevin Danso on loan from RC Lens with a buy obligation in the summer.

It seems that the club chiefs are eyeing a marquee addition at the heart of their defensive unit in the summer. Tottenham are reportedly set to battle West Ham United for Juventus’ Federico Gatti, who is rated at around €20m.

Following Juventus’ elimination from the Champions League at the hands of PSV Eindhoven earlier this week, internal tensions within the squad has intensified. This has led to a potential squad overhaul in the upcoming summer transfer window, with Gatti set to be sacrificed in a bid to raise funds to boost the transfer kitty.

Federico Gatti could be a solid signing for Tottenham

Gatti has been a part of the Juventus squad since moving from Frosinone in 2022. He cemented his spot in the starting XI last season, racking up 36 appearances across all competitions. The five-cap Italy international has continued to be a reliable presence at the back under new boss Thiago Motta, showing great leadership skills.

However, Juventus are planning to part ways with the 26-year-old at the end of the season, which has alerted many clubs including Spurs and West Ham. Tottenham certainly need more depth in the central defensive unit, especially Romero and Van de Ven being injury prone and Dragusin out for the foreseeable future with a serious knee injury.

With his robustness, ball-playing skills, leadership and experience, Gatti could make an instant impact to Ange Postecoglou’s squad next season. And at just €20m, Tottenham could pull off an absolute bargain by landing the Juventus star.
