The North London club have enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2023/24 season under the leadership of new manager Ange Postecoglou. They beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Friday evening to consolidate their position at the top of the table as well as continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.

With no European commitments this time around, Ange Postecoglou and his team can solely focus on the Premier League and they will want to remain in the title fight when the transfer window reopens. With the club harbouring hopes of staying at the summit, the board is assessing the possibility of investing heavily in the January transfer window.

Postecoglou remains keen on bolstering certain areas of their squad, with central midfield one of his priorities. One of the names that reportedly caught the Spurs boss’ attention is PSG’s Fabian Ruiz, as he looks to add a player to compliment Yves Bissouma in the middle of the park.

Fabian Ruiz could move on from PSG in January

Fabian Ruiz has lost his place to teenage star Warren Zaire-Emery at PSG this season, accumulating only 404 minutes across nine Ligue 1 games. The Spanish midfielder, who has a contract with PSG until 2027, could be willing to change his scene due to the lack of regular starting opportunities under Luis Enrique.

The 27-year-old’s situation has alerted Tottenham, who despite having a solid depth in the midfield unit beyond their starting pair of Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr would want to add in that position. This is because Bissouma and Sarr will jet off to the AFCON in mid-January, which will ideally leave Postecoglou with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, Giovani Lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur as options. There is a chance of Hojbjerg leaving Spurs following a lack of game time, while Bentancur has just returned from a long injury layoff.

This should open up space in the squad for a midfield addition, with Postecoglou keen on having Ruiz. The Spurs boss is understood to have been attracted by Ruiz’s ‘versatility and experience in the centre of the park’, and the addition of the ex-Napoli star would represent an important boost for the North London side. Ruiz would provide experience, energy, creativity, versatility and dynamism, as well as improve the depth of the Spurs squad.

However, any move for the Spain international will depend on the fee PSG might demand, with Tottenham unlikely to overpay for the 27-year-old in the winter window.
