Mourinho Invited Meunier to join Tottenham

Reports have suggested that Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has contacted Thomas Meunier. The Paris Saint-German right-back’s contract expires with the French superclub at the end of June. This Summer he will be available to sign on a free transfer; Spurs are one of the clubs interested in the Belgian international.

Mourinho and Meunier

Meunier was linked with a move to Arsenal last year – Manchester United were also considering signing him but they opted for Aaron Wan Bissaka instead.

However, according to L’Equipe, Portuguese boss Mourinho has targeted the acquisition of Meunier and has contacted the 28-year-old about the prospect of joining Spurs.

This report claims that Mourinho phoned Meunier and said that he wants him in his Spurs squad next season and the phone call was well received by the Belgian defender. However, the French football news site also states that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has to approve this signing – he reportedly would prefer to sign younger players. This information may not be completely trustworthy as there were plenty of reports a month ago declaring that Meunier had agreed to join German outfit Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer.

Last month, Meunier said in an interview by RTBF: ‘A free, international player, who plays in the FIFA ranked world’s No.1 team [Belgium] and who is 28 years old, it cannot be a bad buy, even if I get gangrene and I have to cut off a leg!

‘Clubs don’t have much to lose in the investment, and I think they know it. They have everything to gain.

‘Everything that circulates on me on social media versus Dortmund, I don’t understand: I’ve seen so many articles linking me to Tottenham or Inter.

‘I don’t understand this madness. My main objective is always to stay in Paris, but for the moment it’s pretty calm.’

Meunier also commented on how the season should finish: “I still hope that we can continue around mid-May. Even games behind closed doors generate money and I think we can manage it. If we call off everything, it will be lost season and this will have negative consequences on football.”

Nothing has emerged about Meunier signing a new contract and remaining in Paris. With many clubs seeing Meunier as a financial coup, the North London club will have to fight off lots of competition.

Some Spurs fans have reacted to this deal on Twitter.
