Manchester United are favourites to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana after Chelsea ended their interest in the player.

The Cameroon international, 27, has been a target for both Manchester United and Chelsea, with the Premier League sides looking for a new goalkeeper this summer. As for Man United, Erik ten Hag is looking for a ball-playing, sweeper keeper to replace David de Gea as the club’s no.1 next season. The Dutch tactician’s search for a goalkeeper of such a profile has seen the Red Devils linked heavily with FC Porto’s Diogo Costa and most recently Andre Onana.

Onana joined Inter Milan on a free transfer from Ajax last summer and enjoyed a strong debut campaign in Italy, especially catching the eye with his distribution from the back and box dominance in the Champions League final against Manchester City. Inter reportedly value their goalkeeper at £50 million, with the 27-year-old keen to move to Old Trafford.

David de Gea heading for Man United exit as contract talks stall

David de Gea did win the Golden Glove award for most clean sheets (17) in the Premier League last season but he also faced criticism following several high-profile errors. Man United remain in contract talks with the Spanish shot-stopper, who will be a free agent next month if no agreement is found and is attracting interest from Saudi Arabian clubs.

De Gea, 32, may still stay at Old Trafford but is unlikely to want to do so if he is not the first-choice goalkeeper. There does remain some ambiguity over the goalkeeper position at Old Trafford and Ten Hag is keen to solve it before the new season commences.

Erik ten Hag wants to bring Andre Onana to Old Trafford

With Chelsea out of the equation, it appears Ten Hag’s Man United are now in pole position to land Andre Onana. Ten Hag and Onana worked together during their time at Ajax and the 27-year-old could reunite with the Dutchman again, just one year after moving to Inter Milan.

Onana is excellent with the ball at his feet, great aerially and dominant in the box—a far cry from De Gea currently between United’s sticks. At 27, the Cameroon international is yet to hit his peak years, so he is ideal to solve one of the Red Devils’ long-standing problems.

Signing the ex-Ajax star would transform United, allowing Ten Hag to implement his philosophy and principles to the highest degree. All in all, an agreement for Onana anywhere around £50 million would represent a terrific piece of business from Ten Hag’s Reds.
