Manchester United are eyeing a move for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joey Veerman as a deal for Paris Saint-Germain enforcer Manuel Ugarte has seemingly stalled.
Manuel Ugarte remains the Red Devils’ top midfield target this summer, with head coach Erik ten Hag seeing the Paris Saint-Germain man as an ideal player to complement Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes in the middle of the park. The Uruguay international has agreed personal terms with Manchester United since the start of July, but there remains a gap in valuation between the two clubs over the player.
This means the deal has stalled in recent weeks, leaving the 20-time English champions to scour the market for alternative targets. PSV Eindhoven’s Joey Veerman has reportedly been identified as an alternative target to Ugarte.
Veerman, 25, played an instrumental role in PSV Eindhoven’s title-winning campaign this past term, where he scored five goals and registered an eye-catching 16 assists in 29 league appearances. Overall, the central midfielder ended the season with seven goals and 19 assists in 41 games. The 25-year-old was also a part of the Netherlands squad that reached the Euro 2024 semi-finals, where they were beaten 2-1 by England.
Scott McTominay, and Christian Eriksen expected to depart Old Trafford
With just a month left for the transfer window to slam shut, Man United still hope to revamp their midfield unit. They have identified targets to reinforce the key area of the squad, but need departures first.
Scott McTominay, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro have entered the final year of their contracts. While Saudi Arabia’s interest in Casemiro has cooled down considerably in recent weeks and there are now high chances of him staying, McTominay and Eriksen appear to be sellable assets. McTominay has been on the radar of Fulham and Galatasaray, while Eriksen continues to be linked with an Old Trafford exit.
By offloading the two experienced heads, Man United could make a move for Ugarte having splashed big on the likes of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee. With PSG close to agreeing a deal for Benfica midfielder Joao Neves, Ugarte’s exit could happen quickly. However, if the Red Devils fail to agree a deal with PSG for Ugarte, they may move for Veerman quickly as arch-rivals Liverpool are also vying for the PSV star’s signature.
