Leicester City are interested in signing Juventus defender Gleison Bremer as a potential replacement for Caglar Soyuncu.
Caglar Soyuncu was heavily linked with a January move to Atletico Madrid and might leave for the Spanish side after his contract with Leicester City expires at the end of the season. Leicester City are looking to replace the Turkey international with Gleison Bremer in the summer.
Bremer, 25, joined Juventus from Torino last summer for a fee of around €41 million and has become a key cog in Max Allegri’s defence, scoring two goals in 24 appearances. He has been one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Juventus, who are seventh in Serie A and have already been knocked out of the Champions League.
Following their exit from the Champions League in group stages, Juventus are considering trimming their wage bill and could sell Bremer after just one season. This has caught the attention of several clubs, including Leicester City, who are reportedly ready to shell out as much as €40 million for the Brazil international’s signature.
Further defensive reinforcements for Leicester City?
Leicester City have been excellent under Brendan Rodgers in the last few years but have fallen off the pace this season, as they are 14th in the standings after 23 games. Their defence, in particular, has been a massive area of concern.
The Foxes have the second-worst defensive record in the division, with only Bournemouth conceding more than them. An injury to Jonny Evans has not helped their cause, nor has the lacklustre summer signing of Wout Faes. To address their defensives frailties, the club signed Harry Souttar from Stoke City during the January transfer deadline day.
Harry Souttar and Wout Faes were a part of the Leicester backline that shipped three goals against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. Considering how poor the Foxes were defensively in the second half at Man United, the writing is on the wall and Brendan Rodgers may look at reinforcing his backline again in the summer.
Gleison Bremer emerges as a target for the Foxes
Gleison Bremer has proven to be one of the key men for Juventus, slotting in well at the back amidst the injury struggles of Leonardo Bonucci. However, the Turin club may decide to cash in on him in the summer as they bid to lower their wage bill.
Leicester City are keeping tabs on the centre-back’s situation at Juventus and could take advantage. Bremer is an experienced defender who has been playing in Europe since 2018, and he could be a solid addition to the Foxes’ rearguard. The Brazil international is 25 and perhaps edging towards the peak of his career—so Rodgers’ side could hugely benefit if they manage to get his signature.
The Midlands club will need to tighten up at the back next season to challenge for a spot in Europe, and signing Bremer could only help that case.
