Chelsea contemplating move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha

Chelsea are plotting a summer swoop for Paris Saint-Germain’s highly-rated midfielder Vitinha.

Vitinha, 24, has been a reliable performer for Paris Saint-Germain since arriving from FC Porto in 2022. Despite not being a regular starter under Luis Enrique this season, he has registered five goals and two assists in 23 Ligue 1 games thus far, which are impressive numbers for a central midfielder. His vital contributions have helped PSG establish a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

The Blues have been long-term admirers of the Portugal international and are reportedly looking to acquire his signature before the 2024/25 campaign begins amid Conor Gallagher’s uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

Conor Gallagher could be sold in the summer

Chelsea are planning to sell Conor Gallagher before the end of June to balance their books as they are unable to offer him a new contract. As he is an academy graduate, the midfielder’s sale would go down as pure profit and help improve the club’s finances after massive spending over the last few transfer windows.

Gallagher, 24, has been one of the very few bright spots in an otherwise torrid campaign at Stamford Bridge. The Englishman and his compatriot Cole Palmer have been the two standouts, becoming valuable assets for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. The 24-year-old has captained the club on occasion this term, highlighting the trust Pochettino has in him.

However, the Chelsea board do not seem to share Pochettino’s sentiments towards Gallagher. They were open to the midfielder’s sale in the winter transfer window amid interest from rivals Tottenham Hotspur and repeatedly suggested that he’ll be available for transfer this summer. The England international has a contract until 2025, and regardless of the fact the board are understood to have begun talks over a fresh one, talks have seemingly stalled in recent times.

Vitinha to replace Gallagher at Chelsea?

Chelsea are already scouring the market for Gallagher’s potential replacements. They have revived interest in PSG’s Vitinha, who has previous experience of playing in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers during the 2020-21 season.

The Portugal international has done well at PSG over the last two seasons, and given his age, potential and length of the contract, the French heavyweights will hold out for big money before letting him go. However, Chelsea under Todd Boehly have repeatedly shown that they are willing to splash massive sums to land their top targets.

Playing in the Premier League again could be a tempting proposition for Vitinha. As the 24-year-old isn’t a regular starter under Enrique at Parc des Princes, he may be tempted to leave the club for Chelsea.
