Marcus Edwards, 25, has excelled abroad since leaving Tottenham Hotspur back in 2019. He enjoyed three solid seasons with Vitoria de Guimaraes before signing for Sporting CP in January 2022. The former England under-20 international had an eye-catching 2022/23 campaign where he bagged 12 goals and 14 assists in 51 games, including four-goal contributions in six Champions League appearances.

The 25-year-old winger has been in good form for Sporting CP this season, picking up six goals and eight assists in 37 games across all competitions. Edwards’ performances in Portugal have reportedly caught the attention of Chelsea but Tottenham hold a buy-back option that would allow them to pay only £34m for the player instead of his £52m release clause at the club.

Chelsea add Marcus Edwards to their wingers’ shortlist

With the squad underperforming and ravaged by injury problems this season, Chelsea would be desperate to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window. Scoring goals have been a major problem for the Blues, with summer signing Nicolas Jackson proving inconsistent so far. Wide players such as Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke and Mykhaylo Mudryk have also been disappointing, failing to produce the goods in the final third regularly.

Chelsea were interested in signing Marcus Edwards last year but a move didn’t happen. They could revive their interest in the player, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bolster his attacking options.

Edwards has established himself as a reliable attacker in the Portuguese league, having registered 41 goals and 39 assists in 199 appearances. The former England youth international is versatile enough to operate on both flanks, as well as a centre-forward, and he will add goals, flair and creativity to the Blues attack. The 25-year-old enjoys taking defenders on and beating them with his dribbling, pace and movement. He is capable of scoring goals as well, as evidenced by his six goals this term.

Pochettino knows Edwards well from their time together at Spurs and could be keen to reunite with him at Chelsea. Having failed to cut Spurs, Edwards would be raring to prove his doubters wrong and join the Blues if they come calling for his signature. At 25, he is only going to improve with experience and proper coaching and could thrive in Pochettino’s system at Stamford Bridge.

It seems that Pochettino is keen on signing a winger this summer and it will be interesting to see if they can get a deal for Edwards done.
