Arsenal favourites to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana

Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign Everton star Amadou Onana in this summer transfer window.

Amadou Onana

The Gunners are among several clubs long credited with an interest in the central midfielder, who is currently on international duty with Belgium at the 2024 European Championships. Amadou Onana, 22, made 37 Premier League appearances this past season, scoring three goals and notching an assist from the middle of the park. He played a pivotal role in helping the Toffees avoid relegation for the second season running.

However, Everton need to make a big sale before June 30 to avoid another Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach, and Amadou Onana is one of the few names who could fetch the club a big fee.

Arsenal reportedly appear to be the Belgian midfield powerhouse’s next destination, even though clubs such as Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also shown an interest in signing him. Onana, who is available at around £50 million, has been followed by the Gunners and manager Mikel Arteta for several months.

Arsenal want to sign Amadou Onana from Everton

Arsenal have made reinforcing the midfield unit as one of their summer’s top priorities. They must bring in a quality player as an alternative to the injury-prone Thomas Partey, and Amadou Onana appears to be a good fit at the Emirates Stadium.

The Belgium international has not always been the most consistent performer for Everton, though it needs to be kept in mind that he was among the first names on Sean Dyche’s team sheet last season. At 22, Onana isn’t the finished product and has lots of room for improvement, something Mikel Arteta would work on if the player joins Arsenal.

The ex-Lille man has impressed in the Premier League and, after back-to-back seasons fighting against relegation with Everton, he would be tempted to join an Arsenal side that has competed with Manchester City for the Premier League title in the last two years. The Gunners are one of the biggest clubs in England and would provide Onana with the platform to play in the Champions League and compete for major honours.

Onana would be a fantastic partner for Declan Rice, bringing physicality, power, energy and defensive cover to Arsenal’s midfield. He has gained two years of Premier League experience since arriving from Ligue 1, which could help him quickly settle at the Emirates Stadium if a move goes through.

If Arsenal are to win the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, they should sign quality players over the ongoing transfer window. That said, signing a player like Onana could go a long way in enhancing Arteta’s squad.
