News from Spain reported last week that Sergio Ramos asked Florentino Perez to leave Real Madrid on a free transfer in hopes he could continue his football career in China. But, the Spanish defender calmed down Real Madrid fans by confirming he will remain a “Madridista” on Friday.
Sergio Ramos, the Real Madrid captain and a member of Los Blancos since 2005 became one of the crucial members of the team ever since he joined Real Madrid. With over 600 appearances for his club, Sergio Ramos is among top 10 Real Madrid player with the most appearances for the club. Despite numerous achievements with Real Madrid and the fact that he is the captain, Sergio Ramos reportedly asked Florentino Perez to let him leave the club on a free transfer.
The club’s president Florentino Perez told media that Sergio Ramos and his agent approached him last week in hopes they can negotiate a free release for Sergio Ramos, who received a “good offer” from China and wanted to continue his football career there. However, due to Chinese league rules, the club cannot afford the release clause, which means Ramos would need to join them for free, which is something Florentino Perez was not happy about and understandably so. Letting the captain of the team go for free would “set a terrible precedent for other players” said Perez.
Ramos, 33, is without a doubt one of the club’s most beloved players, as he played a crucial role in his team winning 4 Champions League titles, however, despite all the thing he has done for the club, Ramos was also a target of criticism from fans, who are clearly not satisfied with Real Madrid “accomplishment” this season. Finishing 19 points behind Barcelona and losing 12 league matches for the first time in 20 years, 2018/19 was Real one of the worst seasons in Real Madrid history.
Additionally, the incident of him intentionally suspending himself ahead of the second leg of Madrid’s Champions League clash with Ajax in last 16, which Los Blancos lost 4:1 did not leave fans too happy.
However, despite all that, the Real Madrid captain decided he will stay in Spain where he plans on staying until he retires. In an interview he stated the indeed received an offer from China, however, decided to stay at Los Blancos, where he hopes to retire. He added:
“If one day I go then it is because I think my body does not allow me to give a high level.
“I am the captain of Real Madrid and I feel very loved and supported by my team-mates.
“I’m not looking to renew my contract. I am happy with what I have. People always think it’s a strategy to earn more, but it’s the opposite.”
