Fulham have confirmed the signing of Ryan Sessegnon from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. The Englishman has returned to Craven Cottage, signing a deal until 2026 with an option to extend by a further year.
A Fulham academy graduate, Ryan Sessegnon, 24, left the Cottagers to join Tottenham in a £25m deal in August 2019. The left wing-back/winger’s tenure at Spurs was ruined by constant hamstring problems, which limited him to only 57 appearances for the north London club.
The former England youth international spent the 2020/21 season on loan at German club Hoffenheim, where he made 23 Bundesliga appearances. After the expiry of his contract at Spurs, Sessegnon had been training with Crystal Palace the whole summer.
The versatile 24-year-old managed to impress Palace boss Oliver Glasner in a short period of time, and the south London outfit were keen on handing him a contract. However, Fulham shocked their London counterparts by swooping in and re-signing their academy product.
“It’s amazing to be back. Emotional, as well. It’s where it started for me, where everything began, and it’s amazing to be back,” Sessegnon said in his first interview after returning to his boyhood club.
“It will always be home for me. I think it had the feeling that it was meant to be, coming back here, so I’m delighted to get it done.”
Ryan Sessegnon becomes Fulham’s first summer signing
It has taken some time for Fulham to get off the mark in the summer transfer window. Sessegnon has become Marco Silva’s first signing of the summer window.
The West London club are yet to re-invest the funds received from the sale of Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich. They remain in talks with Arsenal for the potential signing of Emile Smith Rowe. After seeing their initial bid rejected for Smith Rowe, Fulham have found a breakthrough in talks with the Gunners.
The English creative midfielder has already agreed personal terms with Fulham, hinting his desire to leave the Emirates Stadium for regular game time. Only a few minute details need sorting out between the two clubs to allow for the transfer of Smith Rowe to go through. It is very likely the 23-year-old will become Silva’s second summer signing.
