Matthijs de Ligt, one of the most desired football players in the upcoming transfer window has been linked with some of the biggest European football clubs and while it’s still not official where he will end up, de Ligt left a strong hint which just might have revealed where he will play next season.

Ajax captain, Matthijs de Ligt, who has been just phenomenal with Ajax this season caught a lot of attention from some of the biggest football clubs in the world, some of which are prepared to pay big money to bring him to their team. The list of clubs interested in bringing Matthijs de Ligt into the team includes Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester United and Manchester City, with probably more that have not been yet revealed. Where he would end up was a mystery, and to be fair it still is, however, the recent hint Matthijs de Ligt laid upon us more or less revealed where he would like to play. It was reported that Matthijs de Ligt would be keen to join Manchester United, despite the fact, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men failed to secure a Champions League spot for next season. Nonetheless, there is another team that seems to be more appealing for the Netherland defender.

In an interview, Matthijs de Ligt revealed he would like to play alongside Frenkie de Jong, who as we know is travelling to Spain, where he will join the LaLiga champions in the summer for a fee of £65 million.

When asked if he would like to play alongside De Jong at Barcelona, Matthijs de Ligt answered:

“It would be nice to play with Frenkie in a team, but I don’t know if it will happen.”

That works well in favour of Barcelona, who have expressed their desire to sign Matthijs de Ligt numerous times before. While it was though the deal was already more or less finished, the transfer was reportedly held up by Mino Raiola’s demands, as he (in his own fashion) demanded a larger salary for the defender as well as a bigger agent’s fee. That hold up alone does give Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United a fighting chance to land young defender, but the question remains, will that be enough to persuade de Ligt to not play alongside his former teammate?

After a superb season with Ajax in the 2018/19 season, when de Ligt helped his team won the Dutch Eredivisie, Dutch Cup title and of course reaching the semi-finals of UCL, the young Dutch star is understandably one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe. Will it be Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United or Barcelona who will be able to persuade de Ligt to join them is yet to be seen, however with the transfer window wide open, we will get an answer sooner or later.
